Collect of  the Day
Almighty God, we are taught by your word that all our doings without love are worth nothing.  Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
A Reading from Jeremiah 1:4-10
Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, 5‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’  6 Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’  7 But the Lord said to me,
‘Do not say, “I am only a boy”; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.’  9 Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, ‘Now I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.’

Psalm 71:1-6     •795
1.  In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; *
let me never be ashamed.
2.  In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; *
incline your ear to me and save me.
3.  Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; *
you are my crag and my stronghold.
4.  Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, *
from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor.
5.  For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, *
my confidence since I was young.
6.  I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength;*
my praise shall be always of you.
Psalm Prayer
Holy God, be our strength and our salvation, that we may never be ashamed to praise you for your mighty acts.  We ask this through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

A Reading from Hebrews 12:18-29
You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them.  20(For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death.’  21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, ‘I tremble with fear.”) 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.  25 See that you do not refuse the one who is speaking; for if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject the one who warns from heaven!  26 At that time his voice shook the earth; but now he has promised, ‘Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heaven.’  27 This phrase ‘Yet once more’ indicates the removal of what is shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.  28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; 29 for indeed our God is a consuming fire.

Gradual Hymn 328   “Lo, God Is Here! Let Us Adore”

THE HOLY GOSPEL  Luke 13:10-17    Gospel Responses     • 188
Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, ‘Woman, you are set free from your ailment.’ 13 When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. 14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.’ 15 But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? 16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?’ 17 When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

REFLECTIONS FROM HAITI
By Naba Gurung, Humanitarian Response Coordinator, PWRDF
From March 23-30, 2010 I visited Haiti on behalf of PWRDF. While there, I met with the ACT (Action by Churches Together) partners who have been working tirelessly since the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12.  PWRDF has been working with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti along with the Episcopal Relief and Development, with ACT members Lutheran World Federation Haiti, and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee in Haiti. The recovery work supported by PWRDF is being led by the community, who are involved in all stages of the work from assessing the situation through prioritizing needs and working to distribute resources. Anglicans in Canada have raised over $2.1 million for relief and redevelopment work in Haiti.
More information is on the PWRDF web-site.

Thank you for supporting the Primates World Relief and Development Fund

     NOTICES

Welcome Visitor    We are honoured that you have chosen to join us for worship today.  Our hope is that your visit with us has blessed you in some way.  If you belong to another  Church, please take our best wishes home with you.  If you do not have a parish home, we would be delighted to make you welcome here.  Please give us your name and telephone number as you leave the church.  If you would like a home visit or if we can serve you in any other way, please let us know.  Contact information is in the bulletin.  After most of our services there is a time of fellowship with refreshments – we do invite you to join us.

Most of our services include a celebration of the Holy Eucharist: All who have been baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and receive Communion  in your home church you are welcome to receive the Sacrament with us.

Welcome:    to all who are weary and need rest,
to all who are lonely and need a friend,
to all who have erred and need a Saviour,
This Church opens wide its doors and hearts, And in the name of JESUS, bids you welcome.

Receiving Communion  In response to concern surrounding the H1N1 virus, the Bishop has  asked that we modify how we receive communion.  Communion is to be received in one of the following ways:  the traditional method of receiving the bread and then the wine by drinking from the cup is still the most acceptable and safe method.  A second option is that if you wish to receive by  intinction (the host being dipped into the wine) come with your hands by your side.  The administrator will dip the bread in the wine for you and give you the intincted host. The change is that from now on, individual communicants are not to dip their own host in the chalice as this is not a safe practice.  A further option is to receive the host and not the wine.  Receiving communion in one kind (bread only) does not in any way reduce the effectiveness of the sacrament.

Next week we will collect juice boxes suitable for school lunches for the FOOD BANK. Please place them in the basket at the back of the church.

Grocery Fundraiser Has Begun!
The church has made arrangements with Co-op and Sobeys to sell grocery store gift cards as a fundraiser. The best part is, it won't cost you a dime! You can buy a grocery store gift card from the church and we will receive 5% of the value of the gift card. Every little bit helps! We currently have gift cards for $25, $50, and $100. Stop by the table at the back of the church after the service to pick up some gift cards. If you have any questions or suggestions, please see Jamie Morell.

RESURRECTION ANGELS TEAM UPDATE:
There is only 6 weeks till run day! If you haven’t already signed up online, please do so. If you don’t have access to a computer, please see Tara Porter for a form.

Sunday September 12th – Pink Cupcakes after 10:00 a.m. service at the church of the Resurrection. Please see Tara if you have any questions. And if anyone wants to make a donation to the team, please see Tara. Thank you for all your support.

Parishioners who buy their gas at Co-Op are invited to collect the coupons received when purchasing gas and give them to the church.  They will be used to purchase such things as turkeys for the  Christmas Baskets.  You may give them to Wes Cosman or leave them on the desk in the church office.

There will be a TURKEY SUPPER at the James H. Williams Community Hall, Crystal Beach, on Saturday, August 28th from 4:30p.m. -6:30 p.m. Adults:$12, Children $6, Preschoolers free.  Sponsored by the Friendly Quilters.

Crime Stoppers has advised us that they have increased the REWARD, from $250 to $500, for information leading to the identification of those responsible for the vandalism to our church windows last summer.  Anybody with information about this crime can anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (800)222-TIPS (8477).

A reminder that the system has changed at the hospital.  If you are admitted to hospital please be sure to inform them that you are Anglican and you wish a pastoral visit, otherwise our clergy will not know you are there.

CONFIRMATION is being planned for next spring.  Sessions will begin and continue through the fall.  If you are interested in being confirmed please call the office 738 3474  to arrange to participate in the preparation sessions.

LITURGICAL NOTE
Our children and others who are not communicants generally come forward for a blessing during communion.  As Layreaders and Deacons (ie our Deacon Eleanor) are unable to bless, those desiring a blessing need to go the communion station where a priest is located.  When there is more than one communion station during a Service of Holy Eucharist, the priest will generally be at the center station and/or on the organ side of the church. If you are sitting nearer a station where there is not a priest, please go to the appropriate station.

HOLY BAPTISM is celebrated in the Parish of the Nerepis and St. John on a regular basis, usually on one of several especially appropriate special Sundays during the year.   The next Baptism will be on Holy Cross Sunday, September 18th. Candidates and/or Parents are asked to call the office 738 3474 to arrange to participate in the sessions of baptismal preparation. (Emergency Baptism is always provided without delay or preparation.)

If you require a box of OFFERING ENVELOPES please contact Sandra Morton 738 2530 (home) 738 3474(work)

OFFICE NEWS -  The hours for the Parish Office at 20 Macdonald Avenue are Monday to Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Archdeacon Hodge’s scheduled day-off is Friday.  Announcements for the “News” should be received by Wednesday noon of the week it is to appear.

Donations of Publicly-Listed Securities to Public Charities
Donations to registered Canadian charities are eligible for a charitable donations credit. For individuals with cumulative donations to any charity above $200 in a year, the credit in New Brunswick is calculated as 46.84% of the donation amount.
When a taxpayer donates to an eligible charity securities listed on a prescribed stock exchange (or certain other securities such as units in mutual funds), the capital gain that has accrued on the securities would normally be included in income at an inclusion rate of 50 per cent.  However, to encourage additional donations of listed publicly-traded securities to charitable organizations and public foundations, the government has reduced the capital gains inclusion rate for such donations to zero, allowing a full donation credit with no additional income tax on the gain on the securities which would have been paid if the securities were sold.
The Parish of the Nerepis and St. John has the ability to receive donations of these securities through the Diocese of Fredericton.  This can be a great way to reduce your taxes on capital gains and maximize the amount that you can contribute to the items such as the Capital Campaign.
If you need further information about this opportunity or some assistance in making this form of donation, you can contact the Ven. Vicars Hodge at 738-2055, one of your wardens (numbers in the bulletin) or Jamie Whittaker at 693-7724.

If we meet and you forget me, you have lost nothing. If you meet Jesus and you forget Him, you have lost everything!
REDUCE     REUSE     RECYCLE
Did you know that certain items you now discard such as used postage stamps and Campbell soup labels  can be used by your Outreach team?
Postage stamps help to provide Bibles for Third World Countries.
Soup labels help Salt Reef get resource materials.

RECTOR'S DISCRETIONARY ACCOUNT: The RDA enables the Clergy  to provide various kinds of confidential assistance.  Needs that are met through the RDA include such things as food, emergency travel, a bus pass,  or paying for emergency counselling not covered by other programs. Several circumstances of need recently have left the account seriously depleted – and with Christmas fast approaching there will be additional needs. Any financial assistance  parishioners can give with this would be greatly appreciated. Your gift is included in your parish receipt for tax purposes. Simply indicate on your envelope that the gift is designated for the RDA.   Thank you.

EFT - ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER
is available for your Sunday offering.  EFT is easy, it helps the parish with budgeting, and it helps you to determine your level of giving to your church.  For further information contact Jean Wilson 757 8004  or the Parish Office 738 3474.

MEMORIAL CARDS for the Anglican Parish of the Nerepis and St. John are available at both Brenan’s  Funeral Home locations and at Castle’s, Saint John West and Fundy Funeral Home.  To place a memorial please telephone the Funeral home and ask that a Memorial Card be placed.  Remittance  may be made with your regular Sunday offering clearly marked Memorial Fund.

A rector with a wife and seven children moved to a new city. Instead of buying a new home right away, they decided to rent a townhouse so they could assess the area and buy something close to good schools. They had no trouble finding rental townhouses that were large enough to accommodate their family, but the landlords always objected to having a family of nine as tenants.
One day, in frustration, the rector asked his wife to take the four youngest children and go visit the local cemetery. She was puzzled by his request, but went along with it anyway. He and the other three children headed off to investigate another townhouse.
It was perfect and the rector told the landlord he would take it. Then came the usual question, "I see you have children. How many are there in the family?"
The rector sighed deeply and said, "Seven, but four are with their dear mother in the cemetery."
He got the townhouse.

If you wish to CONTACT The Ven. Vicars Hodge, he may be reached at his study 738 2055 (please leave a message) or by e-mail vhodge@nbnet.nb.ca.  In case of an emergency only, he may be contacted  at the rectory 738 8391.

If you know of someone who is sick or shut-in who would like to receive the Sacrament, have them contact the Rector to make arrangements for a visit. COMMUNION at home or hospital is always available.

To  place an announcement or item of interest in the bulletin please contact  Sandra Morton at the Parish Administration Office 738 3474 or by email - chchadmn@nbnet.nb.ca     by Wednesday noon of the week you wish it to appear.
